St John's is one of the four
'Waterloo Churches' that were commissioned in 1818 after the
Napoleonic Wars.
Although it is often thought
that these churches were built as a thanksgiving for Britain's
victory, it is likely that they were constructed to serve
the growing population of Lambeth.
St John's, built in the Greek
Revival style, has a portico with six Doric columns supporting
a pediment.
During World War II St John's
suffered serious bomb damage but it was restored in time to
become the official church for the Festival of Britain in
1951.
The church holds concerts at
lunch times.
