St Margaret Pattens was named
after a type of overshoe made in the locality. These
wooden clogs, or sandals on a wooden platform or metal ring,
were worn over shoes to protect them from the wet.
Built in 1684 - 87, St Margaret
Pattens is one of the 51 churches rebuilt by Sir Christopher
Wren after the Great Fire of 1666.
The Portland stone walls of the
church are a contrast to the Georgian stucco shopfront in
the forecourt. The 17th
century canopied pews and ornate font have survived in the
simple interior.
