St Marylebone Parish Church
Marylebone Road, London NW1

St Marylebone Parish Church, designed by Thomas Hardwick, was consecrated in 1817.  The large, stately church was built after the former church, where Lord Byron was christened in 1778, became too small for the congregation.

Hardwick was determined that his new church should not suffer the same fate and so built everything on a large scale.

In 1846 the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barret were secretly married at St Marylebone Parish Church after Elizabeth had scandalously eloped from her strict family home in nearby Wimpole Street.
