This gallery, part of the Jerwood
Space, is devoted to contemporary art by young British artists.
The Jerwood Space is housed in
the converted buildings of a former Victorian school, later
an education centre, designed by the architectural practice
Paxton Locher. It has subsidised rehearsal rooms available
for young theatre and dance companies, and the rest of the
art profession at the going rate, funds raised from this fund
the other activities, including the art gallery.
The Jerwood Gallery has three
areas for exhibitions of paintings and other events and an
arena for sculpture. These spaces open onto a courtyard
and garden with a pool.
The gallery mounts six exhibitions
each year, and is a significant venue known for its Charitable
Foundation awards, Jerwood Painting Prize and the Jerwood
Sculpture prize.
