When the independent Photographers'
Gallery opened at 8 Great Newport Street in 1971 it was the
first of its kind in England.
The main exhibition space and
bookshop are still housed in this building, but in 1980 it
expanded to 5 Great Newport Street.
The gallery promotes contemporary
photography and remains London's leading venue for photographic
exhibitions, with 24 shows a year.
The Citibank Private Bank Photography
Prize, for the most significant contribution to photography
over the previous year is an annual event at the Gallery.
The Gallery has also encouraged
national galleries to hold photographic exhibitions. As
well as photographic shows, the gallery hosts lectures and
theatrical events.
Although refurbished by Nick
England in 1993, there are plans to move it to a new building.
A plaque outside the gallery
commemorates Sir Joshua Reynolds, painter and founder of the
Royal Academy, who lived here in the 18th century.
