The Cuming Museum, located on
the first floor of a public library, houses the Cuming Collection
and illustrates the history of Southwark.
On his fifth birthday in 1782
Richard Cuming was given a old coin and some fossils and this
inspired him to become a collector.
Opened in 1906, the Cuming Collection
was dubbed 'the British Museum in miniature' but a World War
II bomb put an end to such ambitions.
As well as housing the Cuming
Collection, this small museum also illustrates the history
of Southwark, from the Romans occupation to its recent regeneration.
