The Museum of Domestic Design
& Architecture, MODA, moved on to the Cat Hill Campus
of the University of Middlesex in 2000.
Housed in a glass-and-metal building,
the MODA hosts two exhibitions at any one time - one permanent
and one temporary.
The permanent exhibition, 'Exploring
Interiors: Decoration of the Home 1900 - 1960', is located
on the ground floor. This illustrates how the style
of living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens in Britain altered
in the 60 years following the turn of the 20th century.
The displays are arranged by date, with a separate section
on kitchens. Exhibits include wallpaper, fabrics, furnishing
catalogues, magazine cuttings and photographs. The museum
has examples of late-Victorian Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau,
Art Deco and 1950s designs.
Temporary exhibitions are housed
on the second floor. Previous exhibitions have included
'The Silver Studio Then & Now', featuring original artwork
form the museum's own archive.
The museum holds six collections:
the Silver Studio Collection, donated by a pattern-design
practice that shut in 1963, the Domestic Design Collection,
the Crown Wallpaper Collections, the Peggy Angus Archive of
ceramic and wallpaper designs, Sir J M Richards Library and
the Charles Hasler Collection of typography and printing ephemera.
If you wish view material not
on currently on display please make a prior appointment.
MODA also organizes talks, workshops
and practical days for children.
