Sir Flinders Petrie, the father
of Egyptian archaeology, began this collection in 1884.
In 1913 the result of his desert
excavations was acquired by University College London and
since then it has grown with additions by his colleagues and
successors.
Today the museum is said to have
the largest and finest collection of Egyptian antiquities
in any university in the world.
The collection is arranged to
show the development of Egyptian culture, technology and day-to-day
life. The exhibits include jewellery, pottery, carvings,
ornaments, toys and the oldest piece of clothing in the world
(3,000 BC). There are also human remains such as unwrapped
mummies and a exhumed pot-burial.
