The Royal College of Art was
founded in 1837 as a school of design and practical art for
manufacturing industries.
In the 1950s and 1960s, when
its famous students included Peter Blake, David Hockney and
Eduardo Paolozzi, the college became noted for modern art.
Today, Sir Hugh Casson's mainly
glass-fronted 1973 building contrasts with the Victorian museums
and colleges around it.
During term time the Royal College
of Art holds varied exhibitions of work in progress and degree
shows are held in May and June.
