Vinopolis, City of Wine, opened
in 1999 with the motto, 'Explore, taste and enjoy'.
The multimedia venue was created
by Duncan Vaughan Arbuckle, a London wine merchant, who has
developed two and a half acres of 19th century railway arches
into high vaulted cellar rooms.
After being given a headset visitors
can explore the history of wine around the world. The
commentary includes contributions from famous wine experts
including Hugh Johnson, Oz Clarke and Janice Robinson.
The admission fee includes vouchers
to sample five wines for free, out of the 200 on offer, at
tables. Other features include simulations of a trip
through the hills of Chianti on a Vespa and a tour of the
Australian vineyards in a jet plane.
Wine an be purchased at Vinopolis
Vaults, a wine warehouse run by Majestic. The in-house
shop also offers gourmet food, such a caviar, chocolates and
a range of olive oils, and a variety of wine accessories including
wine racks, glassware, books and corkscrews.
Vinopolis also has a wine bar,
tapas bar and brasserie plus an refectory offering light lunches.
Entrance to the shops and restaurants
is free. The complex has conference facilities
and an art gallery.
