From Alexandra Palace, at the
top of this steeply sloping park, there are panoramic views
over London.
The great Victorian glass-house,
popularly known as 'Ally Pally', once housed the BBC's television
studio. The first BBC telecast went out live from the
Alexandra Palace studios in 1936.
Today, the building is an entertainment
and exhibition centre, with an indoor ice-skating rink.
The 200 acre public park around
the Palace has sporting facilities and plenty of attractions
for children. Features include a children's playground,
boating lake and small animal enclosure. In the summer
there are children's shows and workshops .
Alexandra Park has a nature reserve
with woodland, dense scrub, meadow and a pond. The 'Parkland
Walk', runs from Alexander Park to both Highgate and Queen's
Woods. This shady walk follows the route of a disused
railway line - another section runs from Highgate Underground
station to Finsbury Park.
Alexandra Park hosts bank holiday
funfairs and a spectacular free firework display on Bonfire
Night (usually held on the nearest Saturday to 5 November).
