The
City of London's guilds or livery companies were formed in
early medieval times to protect and regulate specific trades.
Many of the livery companies lost their magnificent halls
to the Great Fire of London or the Blitz.
However, they still play an important
role as the.livery companies own 15% of the City and have
considerable influence. They are also well known for
their charity work.
Members of the livery companies
can be seen in their ceremonial robes during the Lord Mayor's
Show.
The Apothecaries' Society was
founded in 1617 for those who prescribed, prepared or sold
drugs. Former members include Oliver Cromwell and the
poet John Keats. Now most of its members are physicians
or surgeons.
The Apothecaries Hall, one of
the most interesting of the livery halls, was rebuilt in classical
style in 1670, and contains a sketch by Reynolds and portraits
of James I and Charles I.
