Built in 1906, the Ritz was named
after the famed Swiss hotelier Cezar Rit, who inspired the
adjective 'ritzy).
The colonnaded facade of the
chateau-style building was supposed in evoke Paris, where
the most luxurious and fashionable hotels were located at
the turn of the 20th century.
The impressive hotel soon became
a by-word for a level of glamour and extravagance unparalleled
in London.
Today the Ritz still maintains
its air of Edwardian opulence. The French-style rooms
are very grand, especially in the restaurant where chandeliers
hang from a fresco of clouds above the diners' heads.
The hotel's chic atmosphere is
enhanced by tea dances and fashion shows held in the Palm
Court. Taking afternoon tea is the cheapest way for
visitors, suitably dressed of course, to gain access to the
hotel's Louis XVI interior. Outside, its Italian Garden
leads towards Green
Park.
Open to non-residents for tea
or restaurant meals.
