The Roman Bath in Strand Lane
is reached by via an alley on Surrey Street.
The very small little bath and
its surround is almost certainly not Roman. As there
is no other evidence of Roman habitation in the surrounding
area it is more likely that the bath was part of Arundel House.
This grand residence was one
of several palaces that stood on the Strand from Tudor times
to the 17th century until when they were demolished to make
way for new buildings.
In the 19th century the Roman
Bath was opened to the public and cold plunges taken here
were believed to be good for the health. Charles Dickens's
character, David Copperfield, took many plunges in this cold
bath.
Outside the official opening
hours the Roman Bath can be viewed through a full-length window
on Surrey Street by pressing a light switch on the outside
wall.
