| Chinatown,
west of Charing Cross Road, is concentrated around Gerrard Street
and Lisle Street. It was established in the 19th century
around the East End docks at Limehouse, but in the 1950s Chinese
from Hong Kong and the original Chinatown moved to the area,
attracted by the low rents.
Although
the majority of London's Chinese live elsewhere, Chinatown
remains is a closeknit residential and working enclave.
There are Chinese restaurants and shops selling oriental produce,
including the New Loon Fung supermarket on Gerrard Street.
Chinatown is marked by oriental gates in Gerrard Street and
look for stone lions and telephone booths disguised as pagodas.
The Chinese New Year (late January/early February) is
when Gerrard Street hosts a street festival featuring dancing
dragons.
