During the 1960s Carnaby Street
was at the centre of Swinging London. Since its heyday
the pedestrianised street has become more down-market; catering
more to tourists than the fashionable.
Recently there have been
improvements to the area with new shops. Inderwicks,
England's oldest pipe marker ,founded in 1797, is at No. 45
Carnaby Street.
Cobbled Newburgh Street, running
parallel to Carnaby Street, has some of London's more genuine
cutting-edge clothes shop, and nearby Foubert's Place has
hyper-tendy cosmetics and casual clothing shops.
