The Mall leads under Admiralty
Arch and past St
James's Park to the Victoria Monument in front
of Buckingham Palace.
It is the scene of many royal
ceremonies, including the Changing of the Guard.
This processional route to Buckingham
Palace was created by Aston Webb in 1911 when he
redesigned the façade of the place and the Victoria Monument.
The wide road follows the course
of the old path at the edge of St James's Park, laid out in
the reign of Charles II. This soon became London's most
fashionable promenade in the 17th century.
On many important occasions crowds
gather around the Victoria Monument and in the Mall
to watch Royal Family wave from the palace balcony.
When foreign heads of state
arrive on official visits to the UK, flagpoles on both sides
of the Mall fly their national flags.
