The Adelphi Theatre stands in
the Strand, opposite the Savoy
Hotel, and was built in 1806 by John Scott, a prosperous
man, who wanted to launch his daughter's stage career.
The theatre took its name from
the celebrated 'Adelphi', an elegant riverside apartment complex,
that stood nearby.
In the 1930s the Adelphi Theatre
was remodelled in Art Deco style, and today its facade features
distinctive lettering. The lobby and auditorium, with their
Art Deco motifs, are beautifully maintained.
