This venerable Victorian theatre,
set amist grey towers blocks, has recently been extended and
improved by Newham Council. The neighbouring Arts Centre,
created at the same time, contains a gallery, cinema and performance
spaces.
The theatre became famous in
the fifties and sixties as the home of the Theatre Workshop
company under the direction of Joan Littlewood and her productions
of shows such as A Taste of Honey, The Hostage and Oh, What
a Lovely War.
The Theatre Royal is known for
its popular community-oriented drama, musicals and revues. Eight
quality productions a year, almost all British or World premieres,
make it worth the trip from central London.
