The
Sadler's Wells Theatre stands on the site of a 'musick house'
built in 1683 by Richard Sadler. In 1927 the theatre was rebuilt
by Lilian Baylis, who was also a benefactor of the Old Vic.
It was the base for the
Sadler's Well Royal Ballet Company, now based in Birmingham,
until 1990.
Today, the rebuilt ultra-modern
theatre is one of London's main venues for opera and dance.
The London City Ballet, with a classical repertoire,
has its annual season at Sadler's Wells during December and
January. The theatre also attracts world-class classical
and contemporary dance companies.
Sadler's Wells does not have
its own opera company but provides a superb venue for visiting
companies. Those with a regular season here are the
D'Oly Carte company, who were formed in 1875 specifically
to perform the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, Opera 80, offering
works in English, and the British Youth Opera.
As well as the main stage, the
Lilian Baylis Theatre has reopened and used for smaller and
experimental dance productions.
The Sadler's Wells organisation
has also retained the more central Peacock Theatre in Holborn. The
Peacock Theatre concentrates on younger companies and longer
runs of popular shows, such as urban street dance, flamenco
and tango.
