Built in the 1870s, the Savoy
Theatre was built 8 years before the Savoy
Hotel.
The theatre was built for Richard
D'Oyly Carte and it was here that the D'Oyly Carte opera first
created Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas.
The theatre was remodelled in
Art Deco form in 1929 and restored in 1990 after a devastating
fire. The
Theatre Museum in Tavistock Street, Covent
Garden, has a display illustrating the restoration
of the Savoy Theatre.
