Clayton Vale  Edge Lane, Clayton, Manchester

this country park in East Manchester was created less than 20 years ago on the site of a disused Generating Board and Council tip.  Paths were created, steps cut and thousands of trees planted in the four mile stretch of the Medlock Valley.  These trees have now matured and wildlife has returned to in greater numbers than expected resulting in the Vale being registered as a site of biological importance.  The network of paths allows visitors to take a gentle stroll through the countryside and other facilities include a conservation pond area, angling and picnic area.  Access for disabled people to the lower areas of the Vale.
Open: daily Tel: 0161 231 3090

Chorlton Water Park Local Nature Reserve, Maitland Avenue, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, M21

developed from a gravel pit, this green oasis in the Mersey Valley has woodlands, wildflower meadows and a lake. The 16 hectare nature reserve, opened in 1978, has some interesting wildlife including reptiles, amphibians, native crayfish and Siberian pochard.  The site has a number of well-surfaced paths suitable for walking, cycling and jogging.  Other popular activities include angling, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, orienteering and ornithology.  Access for disabled people.
