MetroLink Trams in Manchester

Manchester now has an tram system called Metrolink Rapid Transit System.- a revolutionary new transport system.

Metrolink trams run on the streets of the city and then at Victoria Station join the conventional rail system to become part of the fast commuter service.  The Metrolink system is a vital link between Piccadilly and Victoria Stations, which previously had no connection.

Opened in the 1990s, the Metrolink line ran from Bury to Altrincham but this was later extended to Salford Quays and Eccles.  A recent extension now links with the line to Altrincham at G-Mex and Castlefield.   There are proposals to extend the systyem to the Trafford Centre retail park, Manchester Airport, Oldham/Rochdale and Ashton-under-Lyne.

The Metrolink service operates 7 days a week (closed Christmas Day).

On Monday to Thursday trams run from 6:00-11:30 pm and from Friday to Sunday from 6:00-00:30.

During the week and on Saturdays trams run every 6 minutes from 7:15-18:30 pm.  On Sundays trams operate every 12 minutes from 10:00-17:00

No smoking, drinking or eating is permitted on any tram or at any station along the route.  Bicyles cannot be taken on board but trams and stations are fully accessible for wheelchairs and there are specially reserved places for wheelchair users and mothers with prams or pushchairs. No dogs are allowed except guide dogs or 'hearing dogs'.

The Metrolink connects directly with bus and coach interchanges at Altrincham, Bury, Eccles, Piccadilly, Victoria and Whitefield.  At Stretford a shuttle bus connects the Metrolink service to the Trafford Centre. Metrolink trams have interchanges with the mainline rail stations at Altrincham, Bury, G-Mex, Piccadilly and Victoria.

Tickets

Tickets are obtained from automated machines at the stations.  Passengers must purchase a ticket before travel and retain it until leaving the station at their final destination.

Metrolink operates an 'honour system' but frequent checks are made by inspectors and there are stiff fines for anyone travelling caught travelling without a valid ticket.

For more information on the service call GMPTE (Greater Manchester Public Transport Executive) on 0161 228 7811 - open 7 days a week (except Christmas Day) from 8:00-20:00  Maps, information and timetables also can be obtained from GMPTE Travelshops at main bus stations or by ringing 0161 242 6040 (24 hour answerphone).
