Oldham,
formerly part of Lancashire, the Borough of Oldham extends
from the borders of Manchester and Tameside in the south to
Rochdale in the north, and to the borders of South Yorkshire,
the Saddleworth Moors and the Peak District National Park
in the east.
The town of Oldham is set high
in the Pennine Hills overlooking the Cheshire Plain, 8 miles
north-east of Manchester city centre. The town can trace
its history back to 865 AD but it was the Industrial Revolution
that laid the foundations of Oldham's prosperity.
The introduction of James Hargreave's
'Spinning Jenny' revolutionised its cotton industry and by
the end of the 19th century Oldham was considered to be the
greatest cotton spinning town in the world.
Surprisingly the rapid industrialisation
left large areas of the rural landscape virtually untouched
and today two-thirds of the Borough remain open countryside.
Today Oldham is a modern and
pleasant town with plenty of refurbishment. The town
has an impressive modern Civic Centre complex and boasts three
shopping malls: The Spindles Centre, The Town Square Shopping
Centre and the Tommyfield Market Hall.
Famous people associated with
the town include the composer Sir William Walton, born here
in 1902, and Sir Winston Churchill, who began his political
career in Oldham when he was elected Conservative MP for Oldham
in 1900.
