TraffordTrafford

The Trafford Metropolitan Borough of is lies to the south west of Manchester.

The eastern part of the borough is dominated by the industrial estate of Trafford Park but to the south and south-west lies the open rural countryside of Cheshire.  Like Tameside, the borough of Trafford was organised  around a number of local towns and villages and not based on one major town or city.

Trafford's main towns are Altrincham, Sale, Stretford and Urmston.

The success story of the area is Trafford Park Industrial Estate, built on a former deer park.  It's development was dependant on the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal, which runs right through the industrial estate.  Originally founded by the Cooperative Wholesale Society, the industrial estate soon became home to many other important business enterprises including Kellogs Cereals and the Brooke Bond Tea Company. Trafford Park Industrial Estate was the world's first industrial park and today it is still the largest.

The borough is also famous as the site of Old Trafford.  This district is not only home to Manchester United FC but also the Lancashire County Cricket Club's famous ground.

In recent years  the borough has seen some important regeneration including the construction of the Trafford Centre on wasteland on the outskirts of Trafford Park in 1998.  This vast shopping and leisure complex is the largest in Europe.  Another important addition is the striking new Imperial War Museum North built in Trafford Park on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal opposite the Lowry art gallery.

Trafford Tourist Attractions

Imperial War Museum North,  The Quays, Trafford Wharf, Trafford Park, M17 1TZ

one of the most important openings of a museum in recent times,it opened in 2002 on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal on the Trafford Wharf side of the Salford Quays.  The stunning new museum stands opposite the Lowry Centre on the Salford side to which it is connected by the spectacular Lowry Lifting Footbridge. Designed by the world-renowned architect, Daniel Libeskind, it os clad in stainless steel sheet, and constructed using free-flowing forms and asymmetrical geometry. Its design represents the globe shattered into three interlocked shards as a result of conflict on land, water and in the air.  The 'Earth Shard' forms the flexible museum building, the 'Water Shard' houses the restaurant and café (overlooking the Ship Canal) and the 'Air Shard', open to the elements, forms a towering observatory with panaramic views over the Ship Canal and the Manchester city centre skyline. Built to give a northern audience access to the Imperial War Museum's national collections, Iit focuses on how war shapes lives.   'Timeline' forms the basis of the exhibition, illustrating the change in the balance of world power from 1900 to the 21st Century. The 'Big Picture' is where walls transform into immense screens for a multi-screen, surround-sound audio-visual show using the museum's sound and image archives.  Displays of memorabilia and artifacts of war, including a Harrier Jump Jet and a Russian tank. Houses an outstanding art collection, commissioned during the two World Wars, as well as photographs, film and other documentation. The 'Silos', six partially enclosed tall spaces, stage temporary exhibitions.
