Kirkby
now lying on the edge of
Liverpool's urban area, is a new town that developed in the
post-War years when the Earls of Sefton, owners of the land,
sold the right to build to Liverpool Corporation.
The Corporation needed to provide
housing for those made homeless by the Blitz and for workers
at Kirkby's fast-growing industrial estate.
Kirkby's newly-refurbished town
centre is set out around a pedestrianised area at St Chad's
Parade. As well as the usual shops there is a large
open market to visit (open Tuesday, Fridays and Saturdays).
The Acornfield
Plantation Local Nature Reserve, on Spinney Road,
is one of the few remaining woods of the original Manor of
Kirby.
