MerseysideMaghull

Maghull grew up as an agricutural settlement and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

The town began to grow in the late 18th century when the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was constructed through the town.

In 1836 the first Grand National was held in Maghull but in 1839 the race moved to nearby Aintree.

Maghull began to grew rapidly after the Northway (A59 road) was built between Liverpool and Ormskirk in 1933 and soon became a domitory town for Liverpool.

It's famous "son" is Frank Hornby, the inventor of 'Mecanno' and creator of Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys, who lived in Maghull.  His house was the first outside London to be awarded a Blue Plaque.

Just south west of Maghull is Seftonand neaby Aintree, home of the Grand National, the world's greatest steeplechase.
