Southport
is a famous seaside town on the Irish Sea, Sefton's main tourism
centre.
The tourist
resort, which grew rapidly in the 19th century, was considered
to be more refined than nearby Blackpool.
Southport
boasts miles of sandy beach, a recently refurbished seafront
and the longest overland pier in the Britain (now restored).
On Lord
Street, a mile-long boulevard in the town centre, are numerous
Victorian shopping arcades.
Other
tourist attractions include the Southport
Model Railway Village.
In addition,
there are several fine golf courses in the area including
the world-famous Royal Birkdale.
Today
Southport also serves as a commuter town for Liverpool.
