Wallasey
located on the mouth of
the River Mersey at the tip of the Wirral Peninsular.
The large urban area is made
up of seven townships: Egremont, Leasowe, Liscard, New Brighton,
Poulton, Seacombe and Wallasey Village. These grew into each
other following the opening of the Queensway Tunnel (linking
Birkenhead and Liverpool) in 1934.
When the Queensway Tunnel was
no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic the Kingway
Tunnel was opened in 1971.
The area is also linked to Liverpool
by the Mersey Ferry and a rail tunnel.
The main shopping area is Liscard.
New Brighton lies at the far
north-east of the Wirral Peninsular. For the first half of
the 20th century New Brighton was the number one holiday resort
in the North West of England.
It boasted miles of sandy beaches,
top class entertainment, a Fun Fair and Britain's finest outdoor
swimming pools. Between its completion in 1898 and demolition
in 1919-21 the New Brighton Tower was the tallest building
in Britain. However, a number of devastating fires, the closure
of the outdoor pools and the loss of the Liverpool to New
Brighton ferry service resulted in the sharp decline of the
resort for tourism.
Recently there have been improvements
to New Brighton and its focus has changed from a busy tourist
centre to a comfortable residential town.
