The name Aberfan is associated with a tragic event that happened in the village on 21 October 1966 and shocked the world. 144 people, 116 of them children, were killed when a tip of coal waste slid onto the school and houses.
There is a fitting memorial to this 'lost generation' in the village - a cemetery with white arches and a simple garden of remembrance.
North up to the town of Merthyr Tydfil and into the Brecon Beacons National Park for some fresh air.
