The small town of Pontsticill is set in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the Taf Fechan valley, surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful forest.
It is best known for the tranquil Pontsticill (or Taf Fechan) reservoir, a man-made lake created in the 1920s supplying both water and hydroelectricity. It is a popular place to stroll and picnic on a fine day.
Perhaps the best way to appreciate the scenery is from the heritage steam trains of the Brecon Mountain railway, which travel around the eastern edge of the reservoir. Passengers can alight at Pontsticill station on the return leg and spend some time enjoying the great outdoors. The Taff trail cycle route also passes by this idyllic spot, and the Taf Fechan nature reserve is also nearby.
