Coal was Bonnyrigg's claim to fame from the late 18th century until the late 1980's when the last colliery closed. However, it has remained a thriving town due to its proximity to the city of Edinburgh.
The coal industry may be gone, but it is not forgotten. The nearby Scottish Mining museum is housed within the former Lady Victoria Colliery which used to employ over a thousand people. In 2007 this museum was voted 'Scotland's Most Treasured Place'.
As a complete contrast to the grime of coal mining, the town also has a luxury spa in the 13th Century Dalhousie Castle hotel.
