Penicuik began life as a village created by a local paper mill owner for his workforce. The mills are gone, but this small town remains a prosperous one thanks to its links with nearby Edinburgh.
An ideal base to explore the city and the surrounding area, the town also has many historical attractions that make it more than a stopping-off point. The nearby Castlelaw Hill Fort is a large ancient site with underground passages to explore, and ruined Penicuik House was once one of the finest Palladian buildings in Scotland.
