Swanston is a small but lovely village, nestled next to the Pentland Hills.
Just outside Edinburgh, but feeling very far removed from the big city, the village is known for its picturesque cottages, including thatched buildings dating from the 17th century. Robert Louis Stevenson stayed in Swanston for many years in the 19th Century and wrote about the area.
The area around the village is now notable for outdoor activities, especially golf with both the Swanston Golf Club and the Lothianburn Golf Club, walking in the Pentland Hills, and also the nearby Midlothian Snowsports Centre, the largest dry ski facility in Europe.
