In the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park lies the attractive and bustling market town of Abergavenny.
The town is an excellent base from which to discover the best of the great Welsh outdoors. Explore nearby craggy Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Black Mountains to the north, popular with walkers and offering fantastic views. There are a huge range of activities on offer in the Brecon Beacons, from mountain-biking, rock-climbing and horse-riding, to watersports, gliding and golf.
Back in Abergavenny, there is much to see and do. The market hall dominates the town centre, hosting weekly food, craft and antique markets, as well as providing the main venue for the annual Abergavenny Food Festival. The town has a ruined Norman Castle set in attractive parkland. An imposing early 19th century hunting lodge built on the site now houses an excellent museum with exhibitions on all aspects of local life. There are also some other lovely open spaces, such as Linda Vista Gardens.
The picturesque Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal passes close to the town, with a visitor centre and narrow boats and canoes for hire at nearby Goytre Wharf.
If it all gets too much, try a relaxing tour of the local Sugarloaf Vineyards and sample some of the fine Welsh wines.
