Historic Chepstow is located on the river Wye, which forms the border between England and Wales. It is dominated by its magnificent 11th century castle, built in a commanding position on the riverside overlooking the town.
Other reminders of the towns strategic importance survive in the remains of the old town wall, and the Town Gate, both built in the 13th century. Chepstow's rich history is celebrated today in the town museum, housed in an attractive Georgian mansion opposite the castle site.
This market town has many characterful buildings and a good range of shops and restaurants.
The Old Wye Bridge across the Wye into England dates from 1816 and is a splendid cast iron legacy of the Industrial Revolution. This is just one of the iconic bridges in the area, with two large crossings of the Severn Estuary to the south of the town linking Wales to the South West of England.
Chepstow is also notable for its world-famous racecourse, which hosts a calendar of horse races and other outdoor events.
Chepstow is a good base to explore the many other attractions of this interesting and scenic area. Just to the north, upstream along the lovely Wye valley, are the beautiful and impressive ruins of Tintern Abbey. Along the Severn estuary to the west is the stunning medieval castle of Caldicot, set in an extensive country park.
