The Royal Burgh of Elgin is the most Northerly city in Britain.
A handsome place with fine stone buildings, Elgin thrived during the 19th century largely due to the prosperity brought by the railway. Visit Elgin museum, one of the oldest in Scotland, to find out more about the history of the area.
The most attractive feature of the city is the undoubtedly the stunning ruined cathedral. The remains of what was once the second largest cathedral in Scotland include the beautiful architecture of the west front and an octagonal chapter house.
One of the famous whisky-distilling towns of Moray, Elgin is also home to the Glen Moray malt, which had a visitor centre offering tours and tastings.
Elgin also has traditional links to the legend of Macbeth, made famous by Shakespeare in his Tragedy. The Lord of Moray, then a much larger area, Macbeth is thought to have defeated King Duncan near the town to take the crown of Scotland in 1040.
