The attractive and historic market town of Forres is known for its beautiful parks and gardens which have won awards in many 'Britain in Bloom' competitions.
The town has many links to King MacBeth. It was the site of the castle of Macbeth during his rule in the 11th century, and the setting for his meeting with the 3 witches or 'weird sisters' in Shakespeare's play - who prophesised his rise to the throne, with an ominous 'Double double, toil and trouble'.
Forres has even earlier historical connections, with several Pictish monuments nearby - the most impressive of these being the 20ft high Sueno's Stone, thought to date from around 900AD. Now encased in glass to protect it from the elements, it has beautiful decoration and a detailed carved battle scene.
Whisky is the lifeblood of the area, and at the disused Dallas Dhu distillery visitors can learn about how it was made. Built in 1898, the site is now maintained by Historic Scotland as a working museum, offering a more close-up view of whisky-making than a tour of a commercial distillery can offer.
Other local attractions include the Falconer Museum and Brodie Castle, a pretty 16th century building with important art and antique collections.
