The beautiful island of Great Cumbrae is the larger of the 2 isles of Cumbrae, found off the coast of North Aryshire, and reached by ferry from Largs.
The main settlement is the pretty fishing village of Millport, with attractive buildings spread out along the length of its sheltered bay, making it a popular destination for daytrippers arriving by boat. The rest of the island is a peaceful place ideal for exploring by foot or on bicycle, which can be hired on the island. The island also naturally lends itself to outdoor pursuits, such as those offered by the Scottish National Water Sports Centre. Wildlife abounds, including seal and many varieties of seabird.
There are many other attractions on the island that are worth exploring. The excellent local museum of the Cumbraes brings the history of the islands to life and is housed in the beautifully restored 18th century Garrison House. There is also a popular Marine Research Station Museum & Aquarium, and Britain's smallest cathedral, the gothic Cathedral of the Isles.
