Paulton
is to the north of the Mendip Hills, a former mining village.
The village,
located on the Somerset Coalfield, was the northern terminus
of the Somerset Coal Canal. Paulton was the centre of at
least 15 collieries but all of these were disused by the late
19th century.
Evidence
of the coal industry can still be seen around the village
including 'The Batch', a slag heap in the shape of a volcano.
The village
was also home to the now closed Ashman's Boot Factory (manufacturers
of 'Tuf' boots) and the Polestar Printing factory.
Paulton
with its industrial heritage has now been designated an 'area
of special architectural or historic interest'.
Today
many residents of the large village commute into Bristol and
Bath.
