The small
village of Saltford stands on the River Avon, 5 miles
to the west of Bath.
In the
18th and 19th centuries this was an industrial area, with
a series of mills along the Avon Valley, making brass and
copper goods. The metal industry ceased here at the begining
of the 20th century but the Saltford Brassmill remains.
Saltford
Lock, on the River Avon, was opened in 1727 but destroyed
in 1738 by rival coal dealers to prevent the river being used
for transportation. The lock and weir overlooks the listed
Kelston Brass Mill.
Today
this riverside village has several pubs and its own marina.
Walkers
can enjoy the 3 mile Saltford to Bath (Brassmill Lane) path.
A connecting
route, the 23 mile River Avon Trail, can also be accessed
from Saltford.
