Coatbridge was once a major centre of the coal and iron industry in Scotland, earning it the title of the Iron Burgh. In the 19th century its blast furnaces ran 7 days a week, fuelling the industrial revolution but producing black smog and terrible conditions for the working classes.
These industries have long gone, but are remembered at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life which tells the story of the town and its people through an interactive exhibition. Visitors can experience what life was like for miners and industrial workers with a trip down a recreated coal mine and miners cottages dating from 1840 to the 1960s.
Also in Coatbridge is the Time Capsule, a waterpark with pools, rides, water-powered roller coaster, ice rink and more.
