Named after the holy well of the Virgin Mary, Motherwell grew on the iron and steel industries after the coming of the railways in the Victorian era.
The industry reached its peak in the 1960s when the town gained the nickname Steelopolis, but the closure of the Ravenscraig in the 1990s ended an era for Motherwell. Since then, the industrial buildings have gradually disappeared, but not forgotten. The Motherwell heritage centre is an interactive museum telling the history of the life and times of town and its industry through recreations of foundry and street scenes. Housed in an amazing modern building, it also has a viewing platform 5 stories high which gives panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Nearby is Strathclyde Country Park, with a watersports centre offering a huge range of outdoor activities on the loch, wildlife tails, and hosting many major sports and leisure events. The park is also home to the huge M&D's theme park and the Amazonia indoor rainforest attraction.
Dalzell Estate & Barons Haugh is a beautiful and peaceful park set between Motherwell town and the River Clyde. It offers visitors the change to explore secluded gardens, woodland, wetland and lochs and discover some of the areas many wildlife species such as kingfishers and otters.
