Abbots Leigh

The small
village of Abbots Leigh is located between Portishead and
Bristol.
In September
1651 Charles II sheltered at a manor house in the village
(also known as Abbots Leigh) after his defeat at the Battle
of Worcester. This was the finest house at which the King
rested during his escape to France but it was demolished in
the early 19th century.
To the
east of the village stand Leigh Woods. This 494 acre area
of diverse ancient broadleaved woodland encompass the Avon
Gorge Nature Reserve.

The Avon Gorge, a designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is noted for its geological and wildlife interest. The spectacular steep-sided gorge was carved out during the Ice Age. The Nature Reserve,on the west side of the Avon Gorge, Has over a mile of 300ft limestone cliffs, much of it woodland. Saved from development by George Wills and bequeathed to the National Trust in 1909, Leigh Woods has many rare and unusual plants. Views over the Avon Gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
