North Somerset Tourist Information
North Somerset
North Somerset extends from the River Avon in the north to the Mendip Hills in the south. To the west lie the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel.
Along this coastline lie the extensive North Somerset Levels and the popular seaside resorts of Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare. Inland, take the chance to explore the Mendips.
The area offers bustling towns, peaceful villages, breath-taking coastline, supeb sandy beaches and unspoilt countryside.
The Mendip Hills (also known as the Mendips) run east from Weston-super-Mare to Frome. The higher western part of the Mendips is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Wrington Hill, near Congresbury, has magnificent views over the countryside. The Mendips are popular with holiday makers, and outdoor activities are on offer including climbing, hill walking, abseiling, fishing, mountain biking and horse-riding. The West Mendip Way, a 30 mile walking route, and the Link Limestone Trail are good ways to see this area.
The North Somerset Levels, with a network of drainage channels know as 'rhynes, is an area of low-lying wetland beside the Severn Estuary between Weston-super-Mare and Bristol. An important natural habitat, the Levels has many species of wetland birds, including snipe and lapwings, and it is also home to the rare greater horseshoe bat. Otters are beginning to make a come back on the North Somerset Levels and the mudflats of the Severn Estuary attract migrating wildfowl and waders.
