EastwoodEastwood

Eastwood was the birthplace of D H Lawrence (1885 - 1930). The author, artist and poet is best known for his ground-breaking novel Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Lawrence's father was a miner and much of the writer's work was influenced by Eastwood's coal mining industry.

The town is very different these days: the collieries have now closed and industrial estates have been built to provide employment for the locals.  However, visitors can still see remnants of the industry.

Durban House in Mansfield Road was once the headquarters of the Barber Walker Mining Company and when Lawrence was a boy he often went to Durban House to collect his father's wages.  The imposing building now houses a museum celebrating the life of D H Lawrence.

Nearby in Victoria Street is the D H Lawrence Birthplace Museum.
