Newark-on-TrentNewark-on-Trent

Newark-on-Trent stands on the banks of the River Trent.

This picturesque market town has a long history.

Newark Castle has had a major  influence on the town.  A castle was first built here in 1068 but the current ruins (representing only 20% of the original building) date from the 12th century. The grounds were landscaped in 1887, with the ruined castle as a romantic backdrop.  This magnificent site (open from 9.00 am - dusk with free admission) is often used as a venue for concerts and festivals.

Newark's wide market place is overlooked by its elegant Georgian Town Hall and the cathedral-like St Mary Magdalene, the finest parish church in Nottinghamshire.  A farmer's market is held in the town on the fourth Thursday of every month.

In recent years Newark has become famous for its six annual antiques fair, held in the Newark County Showground.

Places of interest in the town include the Millgate Museum and Newark Town Treasures & Spotlight Art Gallery.  Nearby attractions include the Newark (Notts & Lincs) Air Museum at Winthorpe, the Vina Cooke Museum of Dolls & Bygone Childhood and the Laxton Heritage Museum and Laxton Visitor Centre.
