Ollerton
|
|
|
This
small town lies on the edge of Sherwood Forest.
Historically
Ollerton's main industry was coal mining and in the 1960s
and 1970s the town expanded rapidly. During the miners' strike
in 1984 a miner died in a demonstraton at the mine.
The colliery
finally closed in 1994 and since then the land has been reclaimed
and redeveloped as a ecologically sustainable 'village'.
Tourist
attractions include the Ollerton Watermill and Tea Shop, Rufford
Country Park, Thoresby Exhibition Centre, Pierrepont Gallery
and Thoresby Park.
