Thieves'
Wood Environment Centre
Nottingham Road Ravenshead |
Two carparks
on the B6139 (off B6120 Kirkby in Ashfield - Ravenshead road
) The Forestry Commission's 200 hectare Thieves' Wood is part
of the Royal Forest of Sherwood. The main route north of Nottingham,
known as Kings Way, ran through this area and it is thought
that the fate of travellers passing through gave it its name. Robin
Hood is said to have met Friar Tuck at Fountain Dale, just east
of Thieves' Wood. Today the Robin Hood Way footpath runs through
the wood and there are also trails for walkers as well as tracks.
The Thieves' Wood Centre, on the far side of the woods, has
information about the flora and fauna of the wood. Picnic areas
in the woods.

Papplewick
Pumping Station Papplewick |
South of
Ravenshead.
Built in 1882 - 84 to supply the growing city of Nottingham,
the Pumping Station is the UK's finest Victorian water works.
Housed in the main building are two massive beam engines, thought
to have been supplied by James Watt & Co. These unique 140
hp rotative beam engines raised water from a 200 ft deep well
and pumped it into the reservoir. After 85 years the engines
ceased operation in 1969 when automatic electric pumps were
installed in the pilot well near the gate. In 1974 a preservation
society took over and in 1975 the site opened to the public. Set
in grounds, the Victorian water works includes the ornate Engine
House and Boiler house, covered reservoir and cooling pond.
Features other steam powered engines from local sites, a model
railway and model boat club. In 2005 the Station re-opened after
a £2.1 million restoration programme.
Open: Sundays only (static display, non-steamin), Oct-Mar
13:00-16:00 ; Apr-Sept: 12:00-16:00 Beam Engine Steaming events
on selected weekends see www.papplewickpumpingstation.co.uk
