RetfordRetford

The ancient town of Retford was granted its first charter (permission to hold a fair) in 1246 by Henry III. In 1275 Edward I extended this to holding a Saturday market and the tradition continues to this day.

Markets are held every Thursday and Saturday and a regular farmers market takes place every third Saturday in the month.

Retford grew to prosperity with the construction of the Great North Road and the Chesterfield Canal.  This is reflected in the spacious market square and many fine Georgian buildings.

The town played an important role in the story of the Pilgrim Fathers and this can be explored along the Mayflower Trail, a circular tour beginning at nearby Babworth.

Retford boasts two theatres  - the Little Theatre and the Majestic.  Another attraction is the Bassetlaw Museum and Percy Laws Memorial Gallery.
